A credit union is a not-for-profit, member-owned financial cooperative that exists to serve people rather than make a profit. Unlike banks, credit unions return earnings to their members in the form of higher savings rates, lower loan rates, and fewer fees. They are governed by a volunteer Board of Directors elected by the membership, ensuring every member has an equal voice—one member, one vote—regardless of how much money they have on deposit. This democratic structure means members directly influence the direction and policies of the credit union, including dividend and loan rates. Guided by the philosophy of “people helping people,” credit unions strive to serve all members fairly while also giving back to their communities through charitable contributions. In short, credit unions provide a safe and convenient place to save and borrow, with the goal of benefiting members and strengthening the communities they serve.
